The Infinitude of God

God is boundless in all dimensions of His existence. He is omnipresent—present everywhere! His power, wisdom, and discernment are limitless—they defy quantification. Furthermore, God is eternal in His existence—He has no beginning and will have no end.

Humans cannot fully grasp the infinitude or limitlessness of God because we, ourselves, are so limited. We can only be in one place at a time. Our physical bodies grow old and tired. We need rest every day. We don’t know everything and make mistakes often.

We are limited in our understanding, so we simply cannot fathom just how awesome, how huge, and how unending the Creator God is. Let’s learn about God’s infinitude and wonder anew at His endless presence, power, and knowledge.

What is Infinitude?

Infinitude is one of God’s many attributes. God is infinite. He is not limited by space. His power and knowledge do not run out or have any gaps or weaknesses. His being has always existed and always will, yet He does not and never will grow weary.

People often use the universe to demonstrate the concept of infinity, but it pales in comparison to the One who created it! Nothing else on earth describes infinity as perfectly as the Everlasting God—He alone is beyond measure!

God’s Infinitude on Display in the Bible

God’s infinitude is described in Scripture in a few different places. These passages highlight the various limitless attributes of God.

God is Infinite in Time

Revelation 4:8b (ESV) and day and night they never cease to say, “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!”

In Revelation we find these incredible creatures worshiping God on His throne in Heaven—praising Him because of His holiness and praising Him because of His eternal nature. God has always existed, there was never a time when He was not. And He will never end—He is eternal. That is why He gives Himself the name “I AM” (Ex 3:14).

God is Infinite in Space

Hebrews 13:5 (ESV) Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Psalm 139:7-10 (ESV)

Where shall I go from your Spirit?

Or where shall I flee from your presence?

If I ascend to heaven, you are there!

If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!

If I take the wings of the morning

and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,

even there your hand shall lead me,

and your right hand shall hold me.

Isn’t it amazing to know that the Lord promises to be present with every single believer? Not in part, not for a quick moment every now and then, but always and completely. The Holy Spirit is not limited by space—He is everywhere (omnipresent), all the time! His presence is our portion, the only thing that can truly satisfy us.

God is Infinite in Power

Jeremiah 32:17 (ESV) ‘Ah, Lord God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.

Hebrews 1:3a (ESV) He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.

Matthew 8:27 (ESV) And the men marveled, saying, “What sort of man is this, that even winds and sea obey him?”

God all-powerful. He created the heavens (all of Space!) and the earth (and everything on it) from NOTHING! By His power and will alone, everything came into existence! Then, not depleted in power at all, He continues to uphold and control all He has made. Every breath we take is possible because of His omnipotence (limitless power).

God is Infinite in Knowledge and Understanding

Psalm 147:5 (ESV) Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.

Psalm 139:4 (ESV) Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

God is omniscient (knows all things) and has a perfect and limitless understanding of all things past, present, and future. He knows each of our days, each of our thoughts, and our words before we even speak them. His wisdom (how He applies His knowledge) cannot be tried or measured. It is complete, perfect, and beyond measure.

What Does God’s Infinitude Mean for Us?

How are we to respond to this limitless God, how does His infinitude impact our lives?

We are to Praise Him

Because God is infinite in time we are to praise Him, just like those winged creatures in Heaven. His timelessness is also a reason to hope in Him—He cannot be defeated, He will not grow tired as time passes, and He will never fail us. The same God who created the world and parted the Red Sea (Ex 14:21), will be with us tomorrow, and in fifty years—and forever!

We are Never Alone

Because God is infinite in space we can experience His presence wherever we are—He will never leave us. What a comfort to know that when we trust in Christ and we are adopted into  God’s family, we will never be alone—never! And nothing can separate us from His perfect love.

We are Secure in Him

Because God is infinite in power, we can rejoice that He will keep His promises—nothing can derail His plans, nothing and no one is mightier than He and nothing can ever snatch you out of His hand (John 10:28)!

We are Known by Him

Because God is infinite in knowledge and understanding, we can rest in His plan for our lives—He alone knows the future. This isn’t easy to do and there will still be trouble in our lives, God says so (John 16:33). But peace is found in surrendering our lives to God whose wisdom is endless.

Christian, do you see the awesomeness of God? Are you reminded of His limitless majesty, power, and wisdom? Praise Him and rejoice that you belong to Him.

Jeremiah 10:6 (ESV) There is none like you, O Lord; you are great, and your name is great in might.
